Trying to Think Positively Through the Review Process

Yesterday was a big day for me.
Two people are officially reading my novel to provide an editorial review.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t freaking out.
Reviews are everything in the publishing world. They can make or break a book. Think about how often you come across a book or movie and consider whether or not to engage with it. Aren’t the reviews a major factor? How many stars does it have? What do people think about it? Is it worth your time?
My first reviewer is from the Book Review Directory. It’s a website featuring a range of readers who specialize in reviewing novels and providing unbiased editorial feedback. I have no idea who will be reviewing mine. I don’t know if they’ll connect with the messages I’m trying to convey, the themes I’m exploring, or the characters in the text. But they will read it—and they will review it.
My second reviewer is a fellow author I’ve been following on X. They have nearly 10,000 followers, have published multiple books, and are active in both the writing and educational worlds. They seemed like a great fit to read my novel, and I’m incredibly fortunate they agreed to provide a review.
To be honest, I’m terrified. I barely slept last night, maybe an hour or two at most. I keep thinking about all the negative feedback they could give and how it might impact the book before it even launches. But deep down, I know what I’ve given them is good. I know the story’s worth and the journey it offers when read cover to cover. There’s a decent chance they’ll love it, and their support could bring more attention to the book.
The more I reflect on it, I realize that the waiting is the hardest part (Shoutout Tom Petty). I’m in a period of constant waiting right now—waiting for reviews, waiting for my book cover to be completed, waiting for feedback from beta readers. Just waiting and waiting…
Though it’s worth mentioning that night, the second reviewer, the author, posted on her socials:
“I was asked tonight to read and review a debut novel that’s coming out soon. Normally, I beg off. This time, something told me to accept. I’m so pleased I did. So far, it’s a great and informative read.”
Oh boy. It’s going to be a long month.
Reviews of Whalers, and the cover reveal, are coming soon. Stay involved on this site for more details, as well as following me on all social media.
