A Historic Blizzard is Pummeling the East Coast, Just as MEDUSA is Geting Ready to Release

Everyone from New England has heard about the famed “Blizzard of ’78”, a historic nor’easter that struck the area with upwards of 110 mile per hour winds and over two and half feet of snow. Never in my life did I think I would ever see something quite like it, yet here we are this morning.

New England is getting pummeled as I type this. There’s roughly 17 inches of snow in New Bedford with no end in sight. The wind is howling and whipping. The house is shaking. There’s still roughly twelve hours left of snowfall and I don’t know when I’m going to be able to leave this house.

Treacherous, yes, but also fitting in a way. On brand, you could say, as my snowbound thriller Medusa; Or, Men Entombed in Winter is set to release tonight at midnight.

Medusa follows a group of intellectuals, led by a girl named Meddy, who form their own utopian society out in the wilderness of northern Maine. The only downside to the area is the snow, which routinely rains down upon their community in bunches.

But Peter Holloway, the protagonist of the novel, sees the snow as a blessing — thanks to his father, Frank.

Frank had a saying whenever winter came around: The cold and the snow are the cost of living in the Northeast. New England had it all. It was a place of good people. No tornadoes, no hurricanes, no earthquakes. It had sandy beaches and jagged coastlines, sprawling forests that turned a beautiful crimson in the fall, and colleges with names that were known across the world.
The cold was the price of admission.

The snow is an constant motif in Medusa. Like Frank Holloway taught Peter, the snow is beautiful, a blessing, a purity that descends from the heavens down upon the people fortunate enough to get to experience it.

But, as we’re finding out in New England, the snow is also dangerous. It is isolating, frozen, and entombing (to use the word in the title).

It’s only fitting, I guess.
